What is it?
Your Anglo/Gambian hosts offer you deluxe, secluded country holiday accommodation for couples or single travellers. We are not far from a beautiful, quiet and unspoilt beach reached either by walking (about 1 hour along country tracks) or using our bikes or free car lift there and back. We aim to please discerning guests who seek some stylish, but affordable comfort, with all facilities, in a peaceful setting with friendly, helpful staff and constant on-site owner management.
The lodges and restaurant (opened in February 2009) occupy a site filled with trees and colourful shrubs creating a dust- free oasis of green. Each of the four octagonal lodges has been designed to allow for maximum cross- ventilation through the louvre windows on each wall. Each lodge is positioned so that all guests have their own, very spacious, private patio and garden area with table and chairs, sun-bed and hammock. Birds come down to water bowls positioned around the grounds and the owners’ large, adjoining mature gardens are left open for guests’ added enjoyment.

We are proud to offer a fully integrated solar power system (generator free!) with constant electricity for pumping water, providing a complete lighting solution, hot water, fans fridge and freezer, thus enabling the entire site to be run from eco solutions.
The lodges have been built to the highest standards with light and airy, spacious interiors designed and decorated using calm fabric colours and locally- sourced handmade furniture in wood and rattan. Each lodge has a super king-sized, four poster bed with colour coordinated 100% cotton sheets, a fully sprung, high quality mattress and is draped in mosquito netting. Additional light weight duvets and blankets are provided in each room for the ‘cold season’.
There is a large sitting area with arm chairs and coffee table and a 4-speed ceiling fan for added cooling if needed. All windows have security bars and mosquito netting. There is a well- appointed wet room with an adjustable wall mounted hot and cold water shower, hot and cold wash basin, flush toilet and storage for toiletries. Large and small towels are provided and are changed regularly. Personal laundry can be handed in and will be returned within the day.

A large lockable walk-in wardrobe room gives plentiful storage space for clothes and equipment. Guests keep the key to this room so that their valuables can be kept safely.
There is good, bright lighting throughout the lodge with additional bedside lights for reading and over-mirror spotlights. The grounds are clearly lit at night. Phones, cameras and laptops can be re-charged using the owner’s home electricity supply (adjoining). Internet access is also offered. We regret that hairdryers cannot be used and there are no plug sockets in the lodges (but the sun is always there!)

The shared plunge pool has submerged seating with plenty of room to sit or stretch out and is filtered with jets powered by solar electricity creating a ‘cool water jacuzzi’. It has three wide steps for access and a non-slip tiled surround. The pool is surrounded by a large tiled terrace with more sun-beds and tables, with optional shade from a spreading laburnum tree.
The open sided residents’ restaurant provides a buffet breakfast and snack lunches or a Gambian Dish of the Day. The evening meal is a 3-course set meal. We take pride in planning and presenting a varied evening meal using local and home grown ingredients and have a wide range of menus to offer. Each night’s meal takes into account guests’ specific tastes and preferences. We offer chilled soft drinks, wine and spirits as well as bottled water. Complimentary tea and coffee is available at all times on a ‘help-yourself’ basis.

Why does this accommodation make a difference?
Environmental responsibility
We have planted many trees and flowering shrubs in the grounds and along our boundary walls. We have placed water bowls for birds throughout the grounds. The track leading to our lodges from the main highway was hand cleared and levelled, skirting round any trees that were en route.

We are fully self sufficient and solar powered for all lighting, hot water, water pumping, pool filtration, fans and refrigeration. We maintain all our solar panels and batteries using a local Solar Power company.
All vegetable matter food waste is composted and used in the owners’ garden to grow salad stuff for the restaurant. Plastic and glass bottles are recycled by donating them to local fruit juice/palm wine makers, tins are taken to the village tip where locals sort for recycling. Other waste is burned and the ash dug into the compost. Waste water is drained into our deep septic tanks. Solid waste from toilets is collected and removed from the tanks only once in every 5 years. Unwanted clothes are donated to local families.
We have our own 9 metre deep well …hand dug . It has two submersible pumps which run on solar power to draw water to two elevated water storage tanks. Hot water is heated by solar power through glass tubes in insulated cylinders providing constant hot water for our guests and the restaurant. Our plunge pool is filled with water from our own supply and requires minimum addition of chemicals as it is pumped and filtered throughout the day using solar power to keep the water clear.

Our chef worked for several years in the Lebanon as well as at the Novotel in The Gambia before running his own small restaurant in Bakau and then a local beach restaurant. He specializes in Arabic food as well as Gambian and Mediterranean influenced menus.
Our original watchman was here with us from the start when our home was being built and before the business premises were conceived. He was one of the local team who cleared the land and who constructed the lodges and takes pride in the gardens as does the night watchman who does all the watering. Our younger watchman maintains the pool and does any jobs required to keep the grounds looking their best. He was recommended to us by the local police who wanted to find him a responsible job after he had been brought to the village by his uncle to seek employment. Our cleaner is a beautiful lady and mother of two who keeps the lodges and restaurant spotless. Our laundry lady is the sister of our chef and she takes pride in washing and ironing (by charcoal iron) and returning everything within the day. She also does guests’ personal laundry for a smallcharge.

Vegetables are either grown in our own vegetable garden or bought from local families in adjoining compounds (lemon trees, tomatoes, papayas, bananas) or from the village women’s garden or the nearest commercial stall about a 20 minute drive away in Brufut.
All our service providers are local. The lodges were built using the expertise of a retired civil engineer/builder who has worked and lived in The Gambia for over 20 years. He designed and masterminded the buildusing 100% local labour. Kemo, our Gambian (Dutch- trained ) Solar expert, comes from Brufut (20 mins away by car/ motor-scooter) to deal with any solar problems and to keep equipment maintained. The plumber, Musa, comes from Serrekunda and travels by local bush taxi and the carpenter, another Musa, who made all our doors and furniture, is also in Serekunda. They all come immediately in response a phone call and complete work before asking for payment unless we need to buy materials.
The pool was built by a British company based in Kololi (about half an hour away) and is drained and cleaned by them annually before the start of each season.
