What will I be doing on this trip?
Using Toyota Landcruisers - the great and preferred mechanical beasts of the Africa -  we will make the  journey across the Sahel (fringe of the desert) towards Lake Chad. Here Niger, Cameroon, Nigeria and Chad all meet. A fascinating area of diverse cultures.

We will then descend through Nigeria towards equatorial Africa, taking in primate conservation projects and remote and ancient kingdoms. A truly all in one African experience.

We will cover many miles, go through extraordinary landscapes, stay with amazing communities en route, meet some wonderful people and you will have good time to zen out as different worlds go by.

For Mali to Cameroon we will travel across the Sahel (edge of the Sahara) and experience the gamut of landscapes and west African cultures, from desert to semi desert to savannah to highlands and mountains to equatorial forest and coast.

"We can’t do everything, but my philosophy for these sorts of trip is: the journey is everything, the destination will reveal itself. We may well come across something so interesting - a festival or such like  - and decide we want to take this in and change our itinerary. This is the beauty of these overland trips, nothing is fixed."
                                                      Guy, Overland trip organiser

                                                      My holiday itinerary...
If you only ever did this trip to Africa in your life, you could claim you had “done Africa”. I could almost call this trip “All Of Africa In One Trip”. In Toyota Landcruisers, the preferred mechanical beast of African travel, we will cover the the gamut of sub Saharan landscapes - sahel, savannah, highlands, equatorial forest and volcanic coastline - and the rich cultural diversity therein. We begin with a blast.
The Festival On The Niger, the best music festival in west Africa, arguably the best in Africa. On the banks of the river Niger in Segou, the former capital of the Malian empire of the 15th Century, you will kick off your trip with a boogie. Salif Keita, Tinariwen, Youssou N”Dour, Baaba Maal - we don’t know who will be here this year, but this festival always attracts the top artists.

Segou to Djenne, the World Heritage city on the banks of the Bani river with the world’s largest mud structure, the Grand Mosque. Djenne to Homboroi, the Monument Valley of Mali - an awesome landscape. We will spend a day here looking for the group of desert elephants that roam the region.

Homboroi to Gao. We will spend a day in this colourful desert gateway city on the banks of the Niger. Then from Gao we will head to Niger and straight over to Zinder to spend a day or two checking out this important sahel city.

From Zinder we will either drop down south to Nigeria and on to Kano, another important and historic city or continue east towards Lake Chad and then drop down into Nigeria at Diffa, and then go over to Kano. Lake Chad is a fascinating area - Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon all share borders on the Lake and it is a great meeting point of the various tribes that live around the lake.

From Kano we will continue on south through Nigeria, visiting Jos and the Jos Plateau, an important Fulani cultural centre and then continue on south through the country towards Ikom and Calabar where we will visit the Pandrillus project for some primate conservation and wild gorilla trekking.

Alternatively rather than doing Nigeria, we could enter Cameroon in the north and slowly head south through the Rhumsiki hills, a region of strange mountain formations, into the savannah regions and on down to Limbe in the south of the country. Limbe is one of the most pleasant towns in west Africa. With Mt Cameroon towering behind it and the Atlantic before it, this quiet, friendly fishing town is the perfect place to end our trip. Relax on the beautiful beaches or challenge yourself to climb west Africa’s highest mountain.

There will be an option for anyone joining this journey to extend your stay in Cameroon and come with me to Esu and the Kingdom At The End Of The Road trip. So we have exciting choices.

                                                      How to get to us...
By Air: Air France is the more appropriate airline.
By Car: You could try overland, but best to take a plane for this one.

                                                      Additional information
Services: All you need to survive. Accommodation is in 3* hotels and some camping
Note: These trips take you off the beaten track. There is not always a tourist infrastructure such as you may be used to. Be prepared for some flexibility.
How does this holiday make a difference?
This trip is guided by professional guides operating small businesses from each of our host nations and ultimately the trip is  hosted by a community of Tuaregs from Mali.

As part of the festivities in Mali the company is sponsoring a mini-festival in Aguelhoc, Mali which supports local musicians and food supply for 2 schools for nomadic children.

The children in these schools have to walk a long way to school so they have to stay in the school all week. The biggest problem for the school is providing food for the pupils.
                                                      Company ethos
This company aims to dispel a few myths and to show you a modern, vibrant, open, safe and progressing west Africa and to ensure that your trip has a positive impact on the communities which host you. Too often tourism in Africa centers around the amazing wildlife and stunning scenery whilst the most vibrant, colourful and fascinating aspect of Africa  - its people - pass by the window of the 4x4. We try to reverse the focus by taking you out into some of the amazing communities which we have befriended over our 20 years of traveling this vast and extraordinary continent:
Mali to Cameroon overland African experience
                                                      • The landscape is merely the background to the colour music, vibrancy and hospitality of the people of  west Africa. Throughout the trip food and water is bought en route and as locally as possible.
                                                      • Before your trip you will be sent our Responsible Travel guidelines, and en route you will be advised about changing cultural sensitivities.
                                                      • This trip minimizes waste by advising clients to follow the African example and recycle everything. You will see how a system that provides no waste disposal produces very little waste.
                                                      • We encourage you not to bring anything that we in the west count as disposable such as razors or wet wipes etc because in Africa they are not disposable.

                                                      Where is it?
