What will I be doing?
Camp Africa presents meaningful and yet enjoyable activities to educate young people around the globe. It brings students together in The Gambia to experience the cultural diversity through sports and education, promote sustainable tourism and provide on going support to health, education and developmental projects in Africa.

The need for tourism sector diversification within The Gambia led to the creation of this unique concept that is designed to open up the rich cultural heritage of The Gambia and West Africa. It will promote responsible travellers of tomorrow, through sports and tourism education.
The concept
Camp Africa is a transnational project that will link Africa and the Rest of the World. Following a pilot project in The Gambia in 2011, it is intended that Camp Africa will provide an annual event and ongoing activities from 2012 onwards.

Camp Africa will offer a 10-14 day programme in The Gambia to people aged 16-25. The pilot programme is set to run in March 2011, and will bring 100 international and 100 local people together to participate.
Camp Africa will initially be overseen by a coalition of organizations in The Gambia who have relevant experience in sustainable tourism and sports development. It will be overseen by the trustees of Plymouth Banjul - a successful charity with a strongexisting structure - the Association of Small Scale Enterprises in Tourism (ASSET), and the International Centre for Responsible Tourism-West Africa (ICRT - WA).

A charity is currently being established to run the project from the UK. This will focus on marketing the activities and providing continued support for volunteers in the West. It is currently being supported by the Fellow's Trust.
Sport is recognised as a powerful tool that can be utilised to contribute to the pursuit of the Millennium Development Goals. As such; sporting activities will be the back bone of each programme.

Yet each programme will also consist of much more. Participants will have the opportunity to take part in community and environmental activities. They will also have the opportunity to go on local sightseeing excursions and trips. These will provide participants with the opportunity to experience African culture and give the informal sector a direct link to the formal sector of tourism.
The difference
The mission of this project is to bring local, regional and international youth together on an annual basis to encourage cross-cultural dialogue and promote tourism sector diversification through a multi-faceted programme of sporting, cultural, educational and community focused activities under the banner theme of sustainable tourism.

Their core objectives are:
  • To support tourism diversification through the implementation and development of a global youth tourism programme for West Africa
  • To continue to develop global awareness of regional commitment to sustainable tourism as a key economic driver and differentiator
  • To positively impact the tourism industry by creating a holistic community that involves both the formal and informal sectors
  • To promote the diverse appeal of West Africa’s cultural and natural landscape, and people; and develop a more positive image for the region
  • To foster social inclusion across local communities and provide practical support to health, education and anti-poverty programmes
  • To develop continuing support for programmes that actively promote sustainability throughout Africa, with an initial focus on West Africa
